Indian American Teja Alapati named U.S. Presidential Scholar

Indian American Teja Alapati has just been named a U.S. Presidential Scholar by the U.S. Department of Education out of 3.2 million graduating seniors nationwide. He is one of the three students in Alabama to receive this honor. He will be honored in Washington, D.C., from June 18-21.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
“It is extremely gratifying to see the culmination of all of my hard work over the years and how much it has paid off,” said Teja. “I feel happy to be recognized for my achievements. It is my passion to compete interscholastically for my school, and I have relished representing Randolph in all arenas, academic and athletic.”
Teja is one of the Class of 2011's 12 National Merit Finalists from Randolph School. He had perfect scores in ACT as well as SAT’s Math and English sections.
It was a great week in academics, arts and athletics for senior Teja Alapati.
At the Senior Art Expo, Teja, an 8th year advanced concert pianist, gave two piano performances, one Bach solo and one accompanying singer Blake Murray.
As this year's tennis captain, Teja led the team to an area championship and is now competing in the state tournament. Teja has been playing tennis since 5th grade and has been on the varsity team throughout his four upper school years.  Teja is also captain of the Randolph Science Bowl, Scholar's Bowl, Science Olympiad, and the math team. He is looking forward to competing in the National Science Olympiad in May in Wisconsin for the third time in his upper school career.

Alabama Indian American student named 2012 Presidential Scholar

By Kusum Singh

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Rakesh Goli of Birmingham is one of the two Alabama students named a 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar, The U.S. Department of Education announced on May 2.
Goli is among 141 high school seniors nationwide chosen for the award, which is given to students for their outstanding academic achievements, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship and service to their schools and communities.
Rakesh attends The Altamont School in Birmingham. He is the valedictorian for the graduating class. He plans to attend The University of Pennsylvania. He is the son of Drs. Vasu and Prameela Goli.
Each Presidential Scholar can invite his or her most inspiring and challenging teacher to accompany him or her and receive a Teacher Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of Education.  Rakesh named Ms. Pattie Bank, who teaches statistics, as his most influential teacher.
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, appointed by President Obama, selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.
Of the three million students expected to graduate from high school this year, more than 3,300 candidates qualified for the 2012 awards determined by outstanding performance on the College Board SAT and ACT exams, and through nominations made by Chief State School Officers or the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts nationwide YoungArts™ competition.
The 2012 Presidential Scholars are comprised of one young man and one young woman from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and from U.S. families living abroad, as well as 15 chosen at-large and 20 Presidential Scholars in the Arts.
The 2012 ceremony will be held June 16, when each honoree will receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion.

Inspirational Teacher:

Mrs. Pattie Bank – She taught me in the summer of 4th grade before I came to Altamont, as well as statistics during my junior year. Mrs. Bank is unique in that after 10 years at Altamont, she still cares about each and every student. I was amazed at the time she would spend after school answering questions. In class, she commanded genuine respect from every student, and I found myself studying every night not for a quiz or test, but simply to understand the material.

Accomplishment you are most proud of:

I was most proud of being named one of two Siemens State Winners for the Advanced Placement Award. During my sophomore and junior year, I had the chance to take 7 APs in a variety of different science and math disciplines, and it has really helped focus my career outlook moving forward.

One thing you hope to accomplish by age 30:

Regardless of what field I am pursuing by age 30, I hope that I will be able to help better the lives of those around me and make a true difference for future generations.

What makes kids successful

In one famous study, children were told they could eat two cookies if they delayed eating the first one. Those who could wait 15 minutes before eating the first cookie scored 210 points higher on their SATs than those who couldn’t wait more than one minute. Impulse control is a crucial factor in executive function. “Scientists know now that being a brainiac is not so much about IQ but about executive function,” Golinkoff asserts. “The ability to switch between tasks, hold things in your working memory, and inhibit impulses is much more connected with success than IQ.”

How to be emotionally secure

http://www.wikihow.com/Be-Secure wikiHow - The How-to Manual That You Can Edit the how to manual that you can edit Sign Up or Log In or Log In via HomeArticlesCommunityMy Profile Edit Home » Categories » Health » Emotional Health » Overcoming Shyness & Insecurities How to Be Secure Edited byMaths genius and 15 others Article Edit Discuss History Be Secure Many people want to know the answer to this question: How do I feel secure? While it's not simple, it is achievable. Realize that it is commonplace to feel insecure but that there are achievable ways to improve your self-confidence and to be a happy, outgoing person. Ads by Google (5) Signs Of Depression These 5 Symptoms Of Depression Will Shock You. See The Causes Now. knowwhatsbest.com Edit Steps 1 Never let others justify your existence. Be strong. Only you can be who you are, so be yourself and enjoy it. Revel in the reality that everyone is different, including you. Ads by Google Why Men Lose Attraction 10 Ugly Mistakes Women Make That Ruins Any Chances Of A Relationship CatchHimAndKeepHim.com 2 Live for the moment. If you are agonizing over the past or where you're headed, you are doomed to a lifetime of living somewhere else. Bring yourself back to the here and now. Be present. Enjoy whatever you're doing, even if it's tedious, mundane, or unpleasant. There is always something worthwhile to be found in your activity to anchor you. 3 Tell yourself that you are a confident, secure person. In telling yourself, you will succeed in convincing yourself. Insecurity is a state of mind enhanced by the word. If someone tells you what you are, dismiss this judgment, because it's usually them reflecting their "insecurities" on you! 4 Don't become so absorbed in your "insecurities" that you don't realize when someone is being mean or unkind to you. If someone doesn't like you and makes you feel hurt, (which will and does happen 24/7 to everybody), realize it's their problem, not yours. The "hurt" that you experience is a desired result of theirs, not an automatic reaction to hold. Learn to push aside the daily unkindnesses and replace them with rational thoughts instead of gut feelings. Try it: "It is their issue, not my personality". 5 Alter what you don't like about yourself instead of dwelling on your faults. A person who consistently says they can't, can't. Don't get that way in the first place; act now rather than mope all the time. 6 Think outwardly but don't forget about yourself. You must be at peace with yourself before you can be at peace with the world around you, you must love yourself before you can love others, you must give to yourself before you can give to others. Your insecurities are not minimal; they define how you interact with others, so it is crucial to fix yourself before you fix anything else. 7 Remind yourself that nobody knows you better than you! And like it that way; stop worrying that "nobody will ever really understand you". That's cringe-factor thinking and will lead you into a blind alley of self-pity all of your life. Put it this way: Are you willing to put in the effort to truly know someone else inside out the way you want someone to know you inside out? Starts feeling creepy doesn't it? Keep some things for yourself, always. People will know more than enough about you given time. 8 Think ahead and make the right decisions towards a brighter future. You can't change who you were, only who you will become. 9 Decide where you want to be in 10 years' time and make it happen. For instance, do you want to live in that big house near town? Plan, save money, and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it. If you don't have a plan, you'll be easily persuaded by other people's maps. 10 Remember that everybody is plagued by insecurities, some just choose not to dwell on them. Be one of the people who don't dwell It doesn't mean your anger, frustration and hurt goes away but it does mean you deal with these feelings far more constructively and don't let them eat you up and stop you from doing things in life. 11 Look at people when they're talking to you, and when you want their attention. If someone says "Hi" to you, greet them back. If you don't answer them, you'll feel weird and they'll think the same. You are there, you can't pretend you're not, so be communicative in the best possible way. Ads by Google Is He Cheating On You? 1) Search His Email Address Fast. 2) See Hidden Pics & Profiles Now! Spokeo.com/Cheating-Spouse-Search 3 Symptoms Of Depression The (3) Scariest Depression Signs That May Be Hiding In Plain Sight. encyclopediafactica.com Edit Tips Get enough sleep. If you're a teen: realize most teens feel emotionally and/or physically insecure at some stage; it's a turbulent and changing time. If you feel like life's too much to handle sometimes, don't bottle it up - vent it. Either on paper, to a friend, or a trained counselor, just let it out. Don't let insecurities take over your life, because they're not there! Have you ever seen an insecurity? Keep reminding yourself "I am in control" whenever you feel insecure or paranoid. On the bus, in the car, at work, or in class, even watching TV - keep repeating it to yourself until it clicks. Remember, we are made up of our flaws as well as our good points. Even if it feels like the whole world is against you, be good to yourself. Remember, "this too shall pass." If you're a student, be in school every day. Learning is necessary, and school is one of the few things you have control of in your life. Smile - You're not hurting yourself by being pleasant. Don't engage in sexual endeavours that could affect your self esteem; once you do something like that it leaves an emotional scar that you can't shake. Edit Warnings If your insecurities feel overwhelming, and you feel like you can't handle it, there's no shame in asking for help. Be nice to people, even if you think they don't like you. Maybe they're just insecure; however, if they are persistently rude, stop interacting with them at anything more than a superficially polite level. Never give details so they can't hang anything off your comments. Check out "how to be yourself all the time" Don't always think negative about yourself, keep your head held high and always tell yourself the postitive things about yourself just don't confuse that with being big headed because you might come off as being concited.
